When you’re planning a road trip, whether it will be a few hours or the whole day, packing some snacks for the trip will make the journey a lot better. It might be tempting to pick up snacks that are easy to pack, like candy or individual bags of potato chips. But there are much healthier options that are better for you and will keep you full while you’re on the road.
To get you started, here are 10 of our favorite healthy snacks for traveling — and the best part? You can make them right at home!
Pre-packaged popcorn can have a lot of fat and sodium. For a much healthier and homemade road trip snack, take some dried corn kernels, put them in a paper bag, fold it closed and cook it in your microwave on its popcorn setting. Top your finished popcorn with butter, spices or anything else you like for a healthier version of this tasty snack.
Make a mix of some healthy choices for a yummy, portable trail mix. Mix in raw nuts, seeds, dried fruit and other things like pretzels or chopped dark chocolate.
Hummus is delicious, simple and easy to make. All you need to do is blend chickpeas, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper in a food processor. Chop some veggies, like carrots or celery, for a deliciously healthy snack on the road.
There are all kinds of recipes available for homemade, no-bake granola snacks. You combine oats, nuts, dried fruit, shredded coconut or all kinds of other flavors with something like honey or brown rice syrup to keep everything together, and you’re in for an awesome treat. They’re even better than store-bought granola bars because you can put in all your favorite flavors!
Core your apples, slice them very thin and bake the slices at a low temperature on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper until they turn crispy. Sprinkle them with some cinnamon for a little extra sweetness.
These are like chocolate covered strawberries, but much healthier! Dip your strawberries in almond butter and then let them set in the refrigerator. It’s a sweet, delicious snack for the road.
For a crunchy, savory snack, make some baked chickpeas. Use canned chickpeas that are drained and patted dry. Toss the chickpeas with olive oil and season them with spices, like garlic powder, salt, black pepper or cayenne pepper. Bake them until they turn crunchy.
Greek yogurt has a lot of health benefits. If you’re bringing a cooler on your trip, be sure to blend up some smoothies for a refreshing, fruity and creamy treat.
Skip the soda during your next trip through the drive-thru. Instead, pour your favorite fruit juice, like pomegranate juice, into a mason jar, and fill the jar about halfway. Add some slices of lime, lemon or oranges to the jar and keep it in the cooler. When you’re ready to drink up, pour in some sparkling water for a fizzy, refreshing soda alternative.
